Finnish National Wind Band Competition 2025 A-Class compulsory piece. Duration ca. 10 minutes. Take a look and listen! Composer’s note: “Dreamer's Wind” is a commission by Finlands Svenska Sång- och Musikförbund as the A-class compulsory piece for the Finnish National Wind Band Competition 2025. I set out to compose this piece from a place of beauty, nostalgia, and remembrance. While composing during the late summer of 2024, I reflected on all the beauty left behind and also the beauty that lies ahead of us, still remembering and appreciating the struggles and hardships. Ideas and visions of dreams and winds are present in the landscapes depicted by this piece — in the emotion, the movement, the energy, the shifts in atmosphere, from the small and personal to the grand and collegial. This piece aims to challenge each performer by inviting them to bring their artistry into the piece — to be dreamers, in a sense, hoping that some of the wind from my imagination catches on to your wings and dreams as you perform the music. Through my years in music, ranging from playing fast punk rock to studying complex contemporary music, I’ve come to realize that all music is difficult and requires skill, determination, and careful execution, whether it's a pulsating and repetitive accompaniment, a glorious trumpet fanfare, or a wild tutti section featuring all members of the orchestra in every imaginable register and figuration. In other words, I did not write a "competition piece" specifically, but rather something that would give each section and member of the orchestra a chance to do their best, thereby serving the piece as a whole. Porra, Lauri (born 13 December 1977) is a Finnish bass guitarist and a composer who has written scores for films and other media, as well as commissions from orchestras such as the Lahti Symphony and the Finnish Radio Symphony. He is also known for his work as the bass guitarist in the Finnish power metal band Stratovarius. Have a look & listen If We Must Die is a composition of an eccentric character; it features abruptly shifting harmonies and moods with a slight jazzy twist, with a somewhat march-like character. A lot to do for everybody in the band, this piece is meant to be proud and bold! Jussi Lampela is a composer/arranger for film, TV and the concert stage, whose credits include compositions, orchestrations and arrangements for various sized ensembles, from duo to a symphony orchestra. Lampela has written music for several documentaries, shortfilms and also music for a Finnish silent film for a live performance. A grand piece for a dedicated windband. 1st prize in the Finnish band composition contest "Pirkanmaan Pinna" (2020). Take a look and listen: Saarinen, Sauli (b. 1988) has studied trumpet at the Conservatoire of Tampere and conducting at the Sibelius Academy, University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, and with Jorma Panula at the ‘Panula Academy’. He received his master’s degree in Conducting at the Sibelius Academy in 2022. Since 2023, Saarinen has worked as a conductor in the Conscript Band of the Finnish Defence Forces. Before that, he worked as a sub-principal trumpet in the Guards Band Helsinki and a principal-substitute in Vaasa City Orchestra and Pori Sinfonietta. Saarinen is a well renowned conductor who conducts music regardless of genre boundaries, and has found himself taking on new challenges on very short notices. In 2021, he conducted the world premiere of the Tze Yeung Ho's modern chamber opera Minn(i)e in Tallinn, Estonia only on a one week notice and in 2022, the opening concert of Xenakis100 Festival in Helsinki only on a three day notice. Hautala’s compositions are mainly for windband, but she has also composed chamber music. Hautala has worked together with the Finnish Navy Band who premiered Laulusarja n. 1 autumn 2021. Mesikämmen (Ursus Arctus) for windband was premiered in 2020 and published in 2021. Hautala's music is rich with beautiful melodies and wistful harmonies. Commissioned by the Montola Wind Band. Karelia is the name for southeast part of Finland. Its famous of songs from where Jean Sibelius with many others have got their material for several compositions. Partly lyrical and partly rhythmic piece of music that is suitable for both concert halls and outdoor concerts. Before Koskinen was appointed to the Chief Conductor of the Finnish Defence Forces he worked as Chief of the Guards Band, Chief of the Dragoon Band, Commandant of the Military Music School, Conductor and Chief of the Savo Military Band and the Finnish Conscript Band. Koskinen has also conducted several civilian Brass and Wind Bands and has both composed and written arrangements for different ensembles and orchestras. Jyrki Koskinen worked as a producer and Artistic Director of the Hamina Tattoo International Military Music Festival. He was rewarded for his acts for developing Finnish Military Music School and nominated as the Military Musician of the Year 2005. In the beginning of 2021 Koskinen retired from Defence Forces and sadly passed away in 2023.

Tero Lanu (b.1975) studied music theory at Sibelius Academy (Master's degree in 2005) and music theory at Tampere University of Applied Sciences (Bachelor's degree in 2013). His compositions include works for wind band, piano, chamber ensembles and symphony orchestra, the largest being an orchestral suite "Four Impressions" which was premiered in 2018 by Pyynikki Sinfonia. He has been awarded in several Finnish composition contests. His music has been described as romantic, melodic and impressionistic. The first one is presented in introduction and Part A. The second one is presented in Part B. The melodic theme is constructed on both chord progressions. Roughly, this is the basis of this three-movement piece of work. In the middle movement of this piece the harmony and melody of Part A is variated. There are several modulations which can be noted by the player. Themes are variated and they are presented also as inversions. To find the inversions is great fun!
