Program notes:
Bland kobbar och skär - Luotojen lomassa is a work for wind band at Grade 3–4 level, inviting the listener on a musical journey through the Finnish archipelago, with
Åland Islands as its destination. Throughout the piece, we follow the voyage past barren islets and sheltered channels, where the changing moods of nature and the ever-present sea are reflected in the music.
The work is structured in several sections, each depicting a specific landmark or a characteristic environment along the route. From calm, almost motionless passages in the fog to more rhythmically driven sections in bright sunshine, the music paints a vivid picture of the different stages of the journey—from departure to arrival.
In one of the sections, motifs from Ålänningens sång are woven into the music as a musical greeting to the destination. The theme serves both as a recognizable reference and as a symbol of the journey’s goal, where tradition and identity meet the personal voice of the composer.
Bland kobbar och skär - Luotojen lomassa was written with the ambition of being both pedagogically rewarding and musically engaging. It offers ensembles an opportunity to work with tone colour, balance, and musical storytelling, while at the same time conveying a clear programmatic idea.
