16.10. Butoh and Queerness by Quentin Chaveriat

    20.00 EUR

Workshop: Butoh and Queerness: Gender Performances in the Darkness Facilitator: Quentin Chaveriat Date: Friday 16th October Time: 11:00 am – 13:00 pm How can butoh transform the way we experience and perform gender? How can the body become a space where masculinity, femininity and androgyny dissolve, collide or coexist? This workshop draws from Quentin Chaveriat’s practice as a Belgian butoh performer, teacher and drag artist based in Brussels. He began studying with Seiji Tanaka in Nara in 2015 and received his teaching method in 2017. Since 2018, he has been teaching butoh, combining Tanaka’s approach with influences from contemporary dance, physical theatre, drag and Body Weather. He also performs as Memento, a drag-butoh creature, and has created performances presented internationally, including Leonora, created for the Queer Butoh Festival in New York. Beginning with basic exercises from Seiji Tanaka’s legacy, the workshop explores gender as physical and performative material. It draws on gender transformations found in the work of butoh artists such as Kazuo Ohno and Akaji Maro, while investigating androgyny, shifting identities and the possibility of embodying a gender beyond fixed categories. Quentin will introduce his concept of drag-butoh, sharing exercises from his research, including The Dead Diva’s Last Performance and his exploration of embodying Leonora Carrington’s spirit through a male body. The workshop will also explore how butoh can enter cabaret: short-form performance, musicality, striptease, glamour and theatricality. Belgian actor, performer and butoh teacher based in Brussels, Quentin Chaveriat began studying with Seiji Tanaka in Nara in 2015. His practice has also been shaped by encounters with many different teachers. Since 2016, he has created performances with Sombre Compagnie, presented internationally in Europe, Japan, Chile, Vietnam and the USA. He teaches butoh in Belgium and internationally, while also performing in queer and drag cabarets as Memento, a drag-butoh creature. He also works as a performer with renowned dance companies such as Mossoux-Bonté and t.r.a.n.s.i.t.s.c.a.p.e., and is currently developing a new creation with bodybuilders. 18.10. The Body of the Voice by Josephine Grundy

    20.00 EUR

Workshop: The Body of the Voice Facilitator: Josephine Grundy When: Sunday 18th October Time: 11:00 am – 13:00 pm Butoh Dance and Voice Workshop This workshop explores the possibilities of the voice through the body itself, using breath and the body's relationship with space as its foundation. It seeks to discover sound through the body and movement through the voice. Elements of physical theatre, Butoh dance, and vocal technique are combined to give each participant the opportunity to explore their voice and discover the full range of its expressive possibilities. We will work with a variety of techniques based on breathing, relaxation, and posture exercises, as well as stretching and the use of mental imagery. We will experiment with vocal projection, becoming aware of different ways of inhabiting space through our physical presence and bringing that awareness into the production of sound. We will explore the body as an object, as a resonating chamber, and as a channel for sound transmission, discovering the wide variety of voices that each body can produce, along with their expressive and musical dimensions. Butoh dance seeks to reveal each person's authentic movement. The aim of this workshop is to use that same approach to open a path toward freeing each participant's authentic voice. Josephine Grundy (UK/France) is a multidisciplinary artist and teacher based in Barcelona. Since she was a child she has always been close to music and visual art, and in her butoh practice she explores different possible relationships between body, voice and sound, different materials, and physical matter in general. Her initial academic training was in Human Sciences at University College London. Then she went on to study the Lecoq physical theatre method in Barcelona, as well as taking workshops and performing with several physical theatre companies. She also has extensive training in vocal technique and lends her voice to a wide range of musical projects and professional recordings. She began to study butoh dance in 2004 and has been developing her own work ever since, collaborating with other artists and performers, and giving regular classes and workshops. • Product image of 18.10. Being moved / an imbalanced dancing body Elizabeth Damour

18.10. Being moved / an imbalanced dancing body Elizabeth Damour

    20.00 EUR

Workshop: Being moved / an imbalanced dancing body Facilitator: Elizabeth Damour When: Sunday 18th October Time: 9:00 am – 11:00 pm My practice is concerned with the perception of a poetic body working its ability to enter in a state of transformation. After a  short gentle warm-up, participants are invited to investigate the body as a form always in transition, in a state of perpetual dissolution, playing with gravity and body support. The in/comfort leads to the feeling of being moved, in a constant risk of leaning on emptiness. This process provides some interesting connections between participants. This workshop is suitable for all bodies and ages and does not require any prior artistic or physical experience. Just wear a comfortable outfit. My main purpose in dance activity is to stimulate the desire to create. I am vigilant to provide participants a working environment where they feel confident. I have experience working with people from different cultural backgrounds, non-dancers as well as elderly and disabled people. In 2000, after being away from the world of dance for 10 years, Elizabeth Damour was fortunate to train with Kim Manri in Osaka and then after with Japanese butoh masters, Atsushi Takenouchi, Katsura Kan… Since then, she has performed solo and collective pieces in Europe, Brazil, Morocco and Japan. Her inspiration comes from narratives about humanity issues. Her practice is concerned with the search of a lost body, a body almost human, that resonates with Russian, Japanese and Arabic poetry. She develops her work through residencies in Japan and in Tbilisi (Georgia). Residing in Paris, she is a Certified Psychosomatics Therapist, Coach, Dance and Art-Therapist and a regular lecturer, member of the CIPSR, the BAAT and the Squiggle in London. • Product image of 17.10. Butoh Dance and Andean Cosmovision by Andrea Casallas

17.10. Butoh Dance and Andean Cosmovision by Andrea Casallas

    20.00 EUR

Workshop: Butoh Dance and Andean Cosmovision Facilitator: Andrea Casallas Date: Saturday 17th October Time: 10:00 am – 12:00 pm This workshop offers a space for deep exploration where Butoh dance intertwines with the Andean cosmovision. Through exercises of perception, stillness, and movement, participants are invited to listen to the body as a sensitive territory in constant dialogue with nature and its forces. The Andean worldview reminds us that everything that exists —human, animal, mineral, vegetal, cosmic— is woven into the same web of relationships. From this perspective, the body becomes ritual: an act of offering, reciprocity, and openness to the invisible. Movement emerges from the connection with the elements —earth, water, air, and fire— and with the ancestral memory that inhabits every gesture, beyond form and aesthetics. Butoh, with its search for the essential and its ability to move between life and death, fragility and strength, offers an ideal language to enter this territory. The workshop is thus a path of transformation: a dance that is not performed but that happens; a space to recognize the archaic and the contemporary that coexist within the body, allowing an authentic expression to emerge —one that connects the personal with the collective, the intimate with the universal. Andrea Casallas is a Colombian-Swiss Butoh dancer, performer and ethnopedagogue based in Biel/Bienne, Switzerland. She is the founder of Yakwa Dance. Since 2005, she has devoted herself intensively to Butoh, developing a distinctive artistic language at the intersection of body, transformation, memory, nature, identity and cultural roots. Her long-standing Butoh practice has been shaped by encounters and training with internationally recognised artists and teachers including Susana Reyes, Susanne Daeppen, Yumiko Yoshioka, Tadashi Endo, Atsushi Takenouchi and Minako Seki. Rather than approaching Butoh as a fixed dance technique, she understands it as an open space for research, where the body, inner imagery, perception, and personal and collective memory enter into dialogue. • Product image of 15.10. From Laban to Hijikata by Rocío Batafurai

15.10. From Laban to Hijikata by Rocío Batafurai

    20.00 EUR

Workshop: From Laban to Hijikata Facilitator: Rocío Batafurai When: Thursday 15th October Time: 11:00 am – 13:00 pm How do we inhabit the void that surrounds us? What is the honest time that allows memories, images, and poetry to find us, rather than us seeking them out? This monograph is a journey from structure toward dissolution. We begin with the Laban System—not as a rigid code, but as a tool for exploring the qualities of effort. We listen to and observe our movement, becoming aware of the kinesthetic place where existence begins: our own body. Workshop Phases: Laban Awareness: The map of efforts and internal geometry. Organic Architecture: The body as a landscape in transformation. Hijikata Notations: The creative use of Butoh-fu for composition. Inner Dance: Discovering a personal language that does not imitate, but emanates. This workshop is designed for those who wish to combine the precision of movement analysis with absolute surrender to the Butoh images. Rocío Batafurai is a choreographer, dancer, art curator, visual artist, and movement researcher based in Spain. Her creative practice is deeply fascinated by organic architecture and natural soundscapes, exploring stage dialogues and the poetic atmosphere of materials as the primary sanctuary for humankind. She investigates the consciousness of space from a minimalist perspective, heavily rooted in the Japanese artistic principles of emptiness and continuum with nature. She has studied video editing, Japanese Sumi-e painting, and performative canvas work, presenting her short-form video-dance pieces at international festivals worldwide.
