In the Lith Printing workshop, taught by Denny Syed the associations darkroom manager, the students learn the basics of the fascinating Lith printing process. Lith printing is a alternative silver-gelatine print development process giving the artist a different set of controls over the print allowing them to steer contrast, tones and grain in new ways.

The prints have a unique look to them specific to the process and allows for many different interpretations of the same negative. This course will specifically focus on Lith printing using chemistry and paper that is currently easily available and the specific concerns that come with them.

  • Saturday 03.05. from 10:00 to 18:00: first theory, then printing (lunch break from 12:00 to 13:00).

After the course the student can:

  • develop lith prints from the negatives
  • understands the process requirements and the materials needed
  • knows about the history and technique of lith printing in theory

In the course there is no teaching on:

  • the basic workflow of the darkroom printing
  • film developing
  • gelatin silver printing

The participants should bring one or more of their own (preferably low or neutral contrast) negatives to make their lith print from, but this is not a requirement for participation, as there will be negatives on site to use as well. The students should have some experience of the basic darkroom printing process and using an enlarger machine.
