FLORENCE MONTMARE. "Death and the Sea I" (2017). Edition: 30+2 AP. Signed and numbered. Certificate of Authenticity included. Hahnemühle Rag 308 g. Available in 2 sizes.

Death and the Sea series consists of 3 works, Montmare created in her residence stay at the Bergmancenter Fårö (Sweden 2017) and is part of her body of works Scenes from an Island.

Scenes from an Island is a utopian dream to co-exist in harmony with nature, a relationship that is both contradictory and exclusive. The overarching theme is the human condition of displacement and transience played out against Ingmar Bergman’s barren cinematic landscape on the remote island of Fårö, Sweden. I staged scenarios; sans figures and with figures transitioning through the frame, to explore the elemental conditions of landscape — bodies contrasted with the desolate topography — the mountains, the earth, the water, and the air.

In a society where neutrality, secularism, and individualism rule, the relationship to nature is almost religious as a way of finding connection. The exhibition was shown at Fotografiska New York, at Bergmancenter, Sweden, and at Helsinki Photo Festival's Nordic Village project hosted by The National Museum of Finland .
