The soundscape of Striking Color is associated with film and stage music. The work is composed of material from the music Viitasaari wrote for the musical Mannermainen nainen (2005). First, a sketch for xylophone and piano was created, which Viitasaari then adapted for the Oulu Symphony's "Tutti juttu" concept concerts as Striking Color (2023). The wind orchestra version is based on this. The harmony of the work is dominated by triads in major and minor keys. The xylophone plays a major role here too, but it is doubled by the piccolo, flute, and even trumpets.
