Throwing on the potter's wheel is challenging but fun and excellent practice to find your center. This activity demands focus and can open up the mind and relieve you of outside worries. At UDUMBARA, you are submerged in a real pottery studio with an experienced potter (Eva Spoof). We have four potters wheels in the studio. On one pottery wheel, everyone takes a turn with Eva; she will make sure that everyone tries on the pottery wheel will be successful. One the other wheel's, you test your skills on your own. It is also essential to observe others and to figure out the pottery making together.
UDUMBARA (est. 1994) is Earth-friendly pottery; we use wild, iron-rich clay from the small village of Kultela in Somero, Southwestern Finland. The material gives the products a wonderfully rich earthy character. By choosing this local raw material, Eva emphasizes the unique and ecological value of this little-used local clay. Wild clay planters are ideally suited for plants' physiological needs. Part of their beauty is their tendency to beautify with age as they weather and absorb mineral salts from the soil. Also, as the sun gives off far more energy than we need to power everything on earth, our studio & kiln are powered by solar energy.

Like piano playing, the pottery wheel takes time and patience to master, and beginners may become frustrated early on. The pottery wheel and ceramics studio, in general, can be a dirty, messy place. No matter what precautions you take, you will end up with clay on your clothes and shoes.
BRING YOU OWN apron and FACE mask, and please wear clothes and shoes you're ok with getting dirty. Long nails can cause accidental gouges in the piece you're working on. If you have long hair, plan on having a way to secure it.
Working at the studio with Kultela clay is "slow design," and big pottery kiln is only fired a few times per season. It also takes much more time and patient when working with wild clay. We will inform you when flowerpots are ready, so remember to be patient.
We will not be responsible for any unclaimed pottery after two months of the date of when they are ready, and you have been informed.
Thank You and Welcome to UDUMBARA!
